Travel with Artists Encounter Local Wonder

The Story of Liwu

Source|Taiwan Cultural Memory Bank

We work hand in hand with local Indigenous communities to protect and replant these precious botanicals. Through careful distillation and thoughtful scent design, we breathe new life into these native plants and the stories they hold. Each fragrance we create is a tribute to Taiwan’s mountains, rivers, and ocean—a quiet form of healing, memory, and beauty, kept alive with intention.

Liwu’s Core Values

Liwu is both a mountain and a river, nestled in Taroko on Taiwan’s east coast. It carries the memories of Indigenous cultures and traces of the Japanese era, with a forest-born scent that has quietly lingered for over a century. The native aromatic plants here aren’t showy—they bloom quietly along rivers and in forests, changing with the seasons. Through conservation and cultivation, Liwu honors the land’s gentle spirit, capturing scents that tell the story of our small, mountainous island—its unnoticed beauty.

Liwu’s Sustainable Handmade Paper

Instead of using single-use boxes, Liwu creates meaningful packaging by reusing the leaves and branches left after distillation.

We work with one of Taiwan’s last handmade paper studios to turn these plant fibers into sustainable wrapping.

The fibers are boiled, soaked, and pulped—without added chemicals or dyes—then hand-scooped, pressed,

and dried by skilled papermakers. This paper is more than just packaging; it carries the story of the land and gives new life to every leaf.
