Collecting and so on Ping Lin, Director, Taipei Fine Arts Museum
Since its establishment in 2014, the Children's Art Education Center at the Museum has promoted five educational programs. The goal of the Center's programs is not to present artwork, but rather to emphasize interactive learning experiences with art, to initiate reflection and dialogue between visitors that generate multiple interpretations about artists' works, and as a long term goal, to cultivate art appreciation and the ability to think about art in the public.
The venue for the Collecting and so on educational program is fashioned like a large open drawer filled with the marvelous ideas of contemporary artists. Artists are collectors of things that provide inspiration or become materials used in artwork. Objects are invested with different meanings through art interpretation, which connects the past and present or feelings with memories, and construct imagination or expectations about the future. The perspectives, interpretations, and creativity of artists can be linked with each viewer's experience of everyday life and reveals meanings locked within an object to extend its significance and the meaning of collecting.
The proposition of Collecting and so on is to invite people to exchange views. Collecting is a human activity and a way for children to start understanding the world. “Do you have a collection? What do you collect?” are questions that can be posed to anyone because collecting is an instinctive human behavior and need. Collecting, whether it is deliberate or not, constructs consciousness through memories associated with things or materials, and is a cumulative process of experience and unique self-expression.
This nine-month educational program reaches the public at different levels through many classes and workshops designed by people belonging to different communities and age groups to respectfully motivate and fully meet the expectations and needs of every visitor to the Museum. We hope to stimulate discussions about collecting and encourage visitors with handcrafting, sharing, the presentation of photographed items, and intimate meetings to discuss topics derived from collecting.
