主要探討近二十年來當代藝術新一波折返「身體」而進行的「跨域展演」所展現的新意、內涵與可能觸發的新詮釋。「身體」經常是二十世紀以降的藝術流派發展到了特定程度時，就會以「行為」與「表演」而折返的基礎 (如Dada 與 Fluxus)。近二十年來在大型機構如全球化下的美術館與藝術中心大行其道的跨域展演，更使得舞蹈、音樂與戲劇等在複雜的層次上互滲，尤其是以「身體」為表現媒介的舞蹈更展現了特別的連結，使得「身體」在美術館與當代舞蹈的不同脈絡下顯現出多重意義。雖然現代理論與藝術實踐總是將「反抗」的想像投射在「身體」上，「展演的身體」除了作為「抵抗機構與體制」的想像投射物，還能是什麼? 身體的展演在「當代」能開展出什麼意義? 千禧年以降的跨域展演浪潮能提供當代文化什麼新的解讀與詮釋? 又為什麼要跨域? 當代跨域展演對舞蹈/音樂/戲劇的意義是什麼? －－透過這樣的跨域與互滲，當代文化與藝術究竟產生了什麼轉變? 「當代展演」，作為讀本系列的第一集，將追根究底，討論究竟是什麼召喚了當代的跨域展演? 當代藝術為何產生了新一波的當代展演? 這一波跨域當代展演的趨勢終究帶給了當代藝術什麼新的觀點?
