Dialogue in the Garden No. 6|2025|Oil on Canvas|Private Collection

Born amidst the vibrant culture of Taipei in 1975 and nurtured in the diverse landscapes of South Africa, Clayton An embodies a fusion of Eastern philosophy and Western academic rigor. His educational journey led him from the storied halls of the University of Southern California to the esteemed landscape architecture program at Harvard University, forging a path that blends deep intellectual inquiry with creative exploration.

In an illustrious career spanning over two decades, Clayton has made significant contributions to the world of landscape architecture and art. His teaching stint at the University of Hong Kong and his role at Guangzhou Industrial University highlight his dedication to educating the next generation of designers. In 2017, Clayton founded a Landscape Design school, affirming his role as a leader and innovator in the field.

Clayton’s involvement in major international projects, like the dynamic streetscape of Pennsylvania Avenue and the verdant Brooklyn Bridge Park, exemplifies his talent for harmonizing natural beauty with urban environments. Each design Clayton contributes to is a testament to his belief that landscape architecture is an art form, a celebration of the symbiosis between humanity and nature.

During the reflective times brought on by the pandemic, Clayton turned his attention to oil painting, allowing his respect for the natural world to permeate through each canvas. Influenced by Zen philosophy, his artistry on canvas is a vibrant interplay of color and tranquility, reflecting his pursuit of harmony and introspection.

Clayton An’s portfolio is a compelling narrative that illustrates a profound engagement with the environment and a unique artistic vision. His work, whether in the form of urban landscapes or intimate paintings, resonates with a deep ecological consciousness and an unwavering commitment to beauty and sustainability.
