In organizing the “Fleeting Shadows: The Photography of Lo Hsiang-lin”, Taipei Fine Arts Museum seeks to catalogue the outstanding works by senior photographer Lo Hsiang-lin and highlight his important contribution to the development of photography in Taiwan. A native of Hsinchu, Lo moved to Hualien from Taipei in the prime of life. The distinctive landscape of Hualien attracted this non-native to stay there for good. In terms of his character, Lo was a conservative and strict Confucian. His scholarly integrity is admirable. But in terms of the pursuit of novelty, he was a bold and enterprising person. Cycling, hi-fi and reading Japanese magazines were his hobby. At the age of 60, he even took up photography.

Lo’s photographic works are closely related to the ink painting tradition. In the works featured in this exhibition, we can see a pictorialist style similar to Lang Ching-shan. But while Lang chose Chinese landscapes as his subjects, Lo photographed Taiwanese subjects in ink painting-like compositions. Skilfully combining a new medium and old tradition, his works display a classical yet modern photographic aesthetic and demonstrate a deep love for the landscapes of Taiwan.

We have assembled documentation on some 300 photographs by Lo Hsiang-lin and compiled them into a catalogue. Some 100 works have been selected for the exhibition divided into three sections: “Images of Hualien”, “Pictorial Photography” and “Optical Experiments”, and two additional themes: “Buffalo” and “Scenic Spots of Taiwan”. Shown together with ink paintings, calligraphy, ornamental rocks and letters, they give a comprehensive view of Lo’s distinctive creative ideas and meticulous photographic approach.
