Ka Tokurai (Ho Te-Lai, 1904-1986) is an important artist that paved his own artistic path outside of the official art exhibition system in the period of Japanese rule. He grew up in the Hsinchu and Miaoli area and later went to school in both Taiwan and Japan. After graduating from Tokyo Fine Arts School, he returned to Taiwan with his wife for two years, facilitating a boom in the art scene in the Hsinchu area in the early 1930s. For most of his life, he mainly resided in Tokyo, Japan. Ka served as an important executive committee member of Japan’s Shinkouzou Art Association from 1958 up until his death. He also participated in multiple other art associations in the 1970s in his commitment to promote art and support new artists. This retrospective exhibition is called Keeping to My Path to emphasize Ka Tokurai’s dedication to art and the artistic path he paved for himself. The exhibition combs through Ka’s works throughout his life, showcasing iconic works from each era, featuring combination of calligraphy, watercolor, sketches, short poems, and notes to present a comprehensive and three-dimensional view of the artist’s development of his own artistic path.
