Foreword

As an indicative contemporary art award in Taiwan, through the continuous efforts to reconstruction and adjustment Taipei Arts Award enables to foster art talents, support their careers, and broaden the art ecosystem. Since 2011, opportunities of solo show in the museum have been provided to awardees. Therefore, Taipei Arts Award shifted from a competition based on individual artworks into a new platform for solo exhibitions, presenting the artists with a challenging experience that tests their abilities to develop their bodies of work into an exhibition.

More than just an award, the Taipei Arts Awards is also a platform, a brand, and also a journey that accompanies artists as they strive to improve. Each artist walks on this path in a unique way, and it serves as an important anchor point in their art careers, as well as a transitional juncture and a breakthrough for their art.

Winner of the Taipei Arts Awards in 2015, Hsiang-Lin Wang, has chosen to present her solo exhibition five years later, after she has gone through a process of deep reflection and metamorphosis. Wang specializes in photography, and her diverse educational background and creative process that is unique to the new generation have allowed her to stand out amongst other awardees of the Taipei Arts Awards. Extending from the "aura" that is observed in her artworks from a few years back, Wang continues to dig deep into her own childhood memories, as she uses a direct gaze to replace language to convey the realizations she's had with her own personal experiences. In addition to presenting visual images, Wang is also incorporating her musical expertise in this exhibition.

Working with sound and the space provided, she uses the connection between the three components to recount the ambiguous line that she senses between memory and reality and the possible mutual implications that the two embody. Deconstructing the African drum into the smallest unit of sound, an intangible but existing space is constructed by randomly compiling the units. Images penetrate through a large scrim and pass through the walls inside the exhibition space, with images formed with overlapping light and shadows. This represents a shift in both spatiality and temporality. Wang sees "flying" as a state of trance, a dream, and "landing" marks a moment in reality. However, the ambiguity between "flying" and "landing" - those moments before she's taken to somewhere nice - feels the most substantial and real to her.

If Metamorphosis, her winning work from 2015, unravels a particular psychological state through the serenity and subtleness it conveys, this exhibition then sees the artist immersing herself deeper in this so-called mortal world, where she attempts to reflect and process her personal experiences in modern life. An opportunity, an anchor point in her creative journey has certainly risen due to the award received and the chance to show her work in a solo exhibition. Meanwhile, the museum has also been given an opportunity to witness a young artist's journey from receiving the award, organizing her solo exhibition, and using her own creative tools to process the connection between the space provided and her artworks. The experience echoes with the intent behind the restructured Taipei Arts Awards, which is to witness interim creative growths of art talents and to provide more encouragement and support to contemporary Taiwanese artists.
