Li Hsi-chi was born on Kinmen (Quemoy) in 1938. Steadfastly adhering to the core aim of modernizing Chinese art, his creative career has been one of constant experimentation and exploration in many directions. Prior to 1973 his painting style was exotic and varied, and from the works of his "Early Series" it was profoundly influenced by abstract art. In the creative period of his "Orientations Series" he also experimented with Chinese gambling paraphernalia as his source material; in this period he mainly did woodcut prints and textile batik, as a way of expressing the continuity of time. In the '70s and '80s his creative concept was to experiment with the painterly nature of grass script Chinese calligraphy and its purely linear structures, and through mediums such as silkscreen, spray paint and acrylic to blend these into his unique modern art vocabulary. This was the period of his "Large Calligraphy Series" works. Beginning in the '90s, Li switched to lacquer painting materials from Foochow, mainland China, which he applied heavily for strong wrinkle effects, producing a dense lacquered blackness to express a sombre, weighty, timeless sense of history, which he called his "Dark Series" creative period. More recently, in his "Postorientations Series" creative development, he turned in 1995 to folk images and symbols, and by dismantling, juxtaposing and blending them in the formal structures of horizontal and vertical inscriptions, made them into modern symbolic expres- sions of Chinese civilization. Taking an over- all view of Li Hsi-chi's work, his skillful use of materials enables traditional mediums to speak a contemporary language, and through his vitality, brimming with creativity, he has blazed a vivid trail in modern art.
