吳大羽的創作，著力於形與色，著意於構思。乍看他的畫似乎近西方風格，然一經品嘗，才體會到是東方韻致的發揚。觀其畫作，是一種印象，是感受的捕獲，是西方的抽象，是中國的意象，無須尋找依據，也難於歸類。並自創提出了「勢象」一詞，人間形相在心魂的翻騰中被吞吐，被變形了。至於作品中的色彩，更可說是達到了爐火純青的境地。他的色彩不止是抒情述志的表現，更是撞擊人們心扉的音錘。所以，林風眠先生就曾讚譽吳大羽是「非凡的色彩畫家，宏偉的創造力」。大羽先生的一生，正應驗了有人說的：「沒有創造過的人會感到空虛，而創造的人們將感到孤獨。」─吳大羽先生富於創造精神的藝術生命，正是一個靈魂孤獨者的獨白。
