鄭桑溪出生於基隆，高中時因一台平價的「鴿牌」（Pigeon）相機，開啟攝影之路。18歲時，他加入攝影家張才成立的「新穗影展」，從張才蘊含人文關懷的影像哲理中汲取創作養分。1950至60年代的鄭桑溪受西方攝影思潮影響，在多件該時期的作品中，皆可見攝影家反覆實驗光影的創作軌跡。大學畢業後，鄭桑溪旋即於美而廉藝廊舉辦個展「飛禽」，在當時因精準捕捉動物活靈活現的神情引起關注。

鄭桑溪作品中最為人稱道的「報導、紀實」性格，則分別源自其任職行政院新聞局攝影室等工作，以及長期拍攝家鄉基隆與山城九份的經驗累積。本次展覽以攝影家的基隆系列作品為選件核心，彰顯鄭桑溪所追尋，「人自然而不做作，攝影者不在場的感覺」的影像語彙。鄭桑溪透過長年觀察並捕捉最為熟稔的家鄉景緻，將基隆時而霧氣氤氳的天氣、當地居民的生活樣態以及產業轉型中的港都面貌，盡收於他蘊含豐沛情感的影像之中。
