Bird on a Potted Plant｜Oil on board｜90 x 75 cm｜Sanyu｜1901-1966｜National Museum of History Collection
As tender shoots sprout, a bird steadily pauses on a branch that looks like a deer antler. In Mandarin Chinese, the word "鹿" (lu), meaning deer, is homophonous with "祿", which means good fortune and auspiciousness. Set on a dusty pastel pink backdrop, the bottom of the cup is wrapped with a brown trim. The distinctively Eastern design echoes with the Chinese philosophical concept, “orbicular sky and rectangular earth”. Also available in a cup and saucer set, the design is simple but enchantingly charming.
