Painting｜Oil on board｜123 x 138 cm｜Sanyu｜1901-1966｜National Museum of History Collection
A spotted cat stretches out on a lawn, lazy and docile, licking its forepaw, seemingly inattentive to the crow on the tree branch. Ruddy earth stretches along the bottom, joining with the green grass to form a scene as boundless as the earth and sky, free and tranquil. The Chinese word for crow is a homonym for “elegance,” so a crow in the wind is an allusion to grace. A cat waving its paw is believed to draw in wealth. Thus, the scene represents both refinement and good fortune.
