Travel with Artists Encounter Local Wonder

The double layers of embossing on the cup and the concave surface of the saucer echo the gradation from foreground to middle ground to background in the painting by Shiy De-jinn, extending his use of color to form spaces.

Shiy De-jinn’s thickblack strokes of ink with slender touches of white space depict the mountainsand seashore with an inimitable poetic cadence.
The blending of hilly heights andshoreline highlights the vitality and power of nature.

Shiy De-jinn was concerned with applying the blending style of Chinese ink wash to watercolor painting, a method he used to create his most iconic images. Watercolor and ink wash were the two media Shiy particularly loved, and his application of the blacks and lines of the latter brought a richness to his watercolors.
