The artistic career of Han Hsiang-ning (b. 1939) began with his participation in numerous international exhibitions as a member of the Fifth Moon Group. Following his resettlement in New York in 1967, he presented a new face to the world in the early 1970s, winning himself a measure of international recognition. Over the past 30 years Han Hsiang-ning has held firm to artistic creation. Recalling his stylistic evolution, his work in the early sixties was abstract, reflecting the first wave of the modernization of Taiwan painting. After settling in New York, Han Hsiang-ning seized upon the merits of photographic realism and began a highly personal lyrical and emotional chronicle. The cityscape of New York, the quintessential international capital and epitome of industrial civilization, acquires a certain personality with the focus of the artist's camera eye, capturing a rational yet poetic slices of time and place. In the late 1980s, armed with the clean, precise technical potential of an acrylic paint gun. Han Hsiang-ning traveled from the periphery of a foreign metropolis straight into the vortex of the times. With the physical confrontation of Taipei Parliament, he probed the bizarre world of politics: in Tiananmen Incident he portrayed the brutality of political crackdown; and in Mount Huang and his new interpretations of classic Sung dynasty paintings, he displayed his attachment to the natural beauty of a homeland he never really left behind despite decades of absence. Each of these works reveals the underpinnings of artists' latent collective consciousness and their private nostalgia.
