Since its establishment in 1983, the Taipei Art Awards has undergone various reforms, but has never stopped. After the reform of 2001, the Taipei Art Awards became free from the limiting categorical framework of media and form, and has evolved into a vital annual art award to be participated and competed by emerging Taiwanese artists.
The 2022 Taipei Art Awards receives a total of 366 submissions. After a professional and careful three-stage selection process, eleven artists are eventually selected into the final stage. Continuing the exhibition design in recent years, the award is again exhibited on the third-floor galleries of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) this year. Each artist is able to utilize an independent and complete exhibition room to express their own distinctive artistic character in the form of a small-scale solo exhibition, which also enhances the way of how their works echo and interact with the space. Through the works of the eleven artists, we can perceive that the artists have demonstrated impressive results whether in terms of the discussion of issues or the meaning of form. In spite of their young age, the finalists all have a highly mature grasp on the use of space, techniques, and media. In addition, they all have different pursuits and emphases when it comes to their creative expression: no matter it is the transformation of the vocabularies related to the spatial site and formal creation, or the representation of bodily perception and the exploration of local issues based on personal experiences, they have shown their works with incredible brilliance and vibrancy.
I would like to thank all the artists, who have devoted wholeheartedly to the exhibition, and have displayed ample creative energy. I would also like to thank the selection committee, including the chair Jian Tzu-Chieh, and all the committee members, namely, Chen Hui-Chiao, Chang Ching-Wen, Liu Ho-Jang, Eva Lin, Lei Yi- Ting, and Frankie Su, who have spared no effort to appraise and select the works from the fierce competition. It is hoped that the annual Taipei Art Awards, which possesses abundant potential and freshness, could enable more people to see the rich cultural heritage and the new vision of Taiwanese contemporary art.
