Lotus Pond|1930|146.4 x 215.2 cm|Gouache|Lin Yu-san|1907-2004
Lin Yu-shan was born in Chiayi, Taiwan. He is considered one of the icons in Taiwan's modern art. Known for his Eastern Gouache paintings and ink wash painting. Many of his works pay special attention to Taiwan's local culture.
"Lotus Pond" was painted in 1930, depicting the most beautiful moments of sunlight lending its golden hues to the pond water at dawn on Mount Niuchou in the northern suburb of Chiayi City. Lin used light gold paint to accent the lotus blossom, giving the painting a sense of warmth and spirituality. This painting presents Lin's techniques of Western realistic painting features and Taiwan's local natural scene. Not only is it considered one of Lin's best works, but it also holds an irreplaceable role in Taiwan's art history.
