PREFACE

Photography has been my favorite leisure activity for forty years. My liking for photog- raphy traced back to my medical school days when I had to take specimen and patholog- ical slides. In these forty years, I took pictures ranging from scenery, static objects, to members of the family and gradually cultivated my keen interest. Later, I perceive that photography can catch the gesture of dancers, the changing of expressions and lighting in a second, making an instant moment into perpetuity. This is the highest pleasure of life. The combination of dancing and photography is the masterpiece of technology and arts.

However, the photography in dancing is a great challenge to me. This is due to the limitation of lighting and angle of the stage-there is possibly only lighting of 15 candles and much inconvenience in free-moving. As a result, to take pictures under very quick gestures and movements is like "to shoot at moving targets." I have to push the shutter to catch the art of combining body, music, and lighting, which requires high skill and dexterity. Consequently, more often than not, I failed, rather than succeeded, in most pictures in the beginning. Finally, through ten more years of practice and experience, I am firmly convinced of the importance of the intuition of the photographers-to go with the gestures of the dancers and the rhythm of the music, expect the movement to be performed in the next second, and "catch" the movement simultaneously.
