【Original Art】 Pisilian 13-33|2013|Paul Chiang|Oil on Canvas|150 x 360 cm ©Paul Chiang Arts & Cultural Foundation

Pisilian is the first series Paul Chiang painted after moving to Taitung. The origin of the word “Pisilian” comes from the indigenous Amis language and means “a place where goats graze.” It is also the name of a village located in the Sanxiantai area of Taitung.

The natural environment of Taitung greatly inspires Chiang’s recent works. Unlike the deep somberness of past works, Chiang imbued the Pisilian series with lush variations in colour conveying the blueness of the heavens and ocean, the light at dusk, and the magnificent brightly coloured likenesses of flowers. On the surface, the Pisilian series exhibits the ocean, sky, stars and flowers, in reality Chiang hopes to express spirituality and freedom.
